Marshall Lawyers WA is a Western Australian based incorporated law firm. Founded by Chris Marshall in 2018, Marshall Lawyers WA is inherently commercial in nature, leveraging off years of corporate experience in a top tier Australian law firm capacity and 9 years providing in-house legal, company secretarial, commercial and project management services to the current largest mining company in Broken Hill, New South Wales with operations across the Globe.

Day-to-day matters were diverse, ranging from international corporate financing to matters concerning individuals, particularly in terms of their employment.

The social and economic future of our State is strong with a wealth of natural resources, a World class climate, an increasingly diverse culture, and reputable business and community leaders who are passionate about WA.

Meet the Team

Chris Marshall

LLB FGIA FCIS (Director)

Chris is a highly experienced lawyer, director and company secretary, holding a Fellowship with the Governance Institute of Australia.  Admitted as a lawyer in New South Wales in December 2007 and as a barrister and solicitor in Western Australia in February 2008, Chris brings over 17 years of legal expertise across private practice and in-house roles.

Chris commenced his career as a Federal Judge’s Associate and, since then, has built a distinguished career specialising in mining and resources, mergers and acquisitions, ECM, capital raising, corporate governance, compliance, international financing, and project development. Chris regularly acts for public and private mining companies, Port Authorities and Government Trading Enterprises.  Chris’ extensive experience spans both top-tier Australian law firms and senior in-house legal and company secretarial roles for multinational public mining companies.

With a strong reputation for strategic legal advice, pragmatic problem-solving, and commercial acumen, Chris is dedicated to delivering exceptional legal and business solutions for clients.

Notable achievements include:

  • Acting for a major Australian Port Authority and Government Trading Enterprise in relation to all commercial Port operations, in addition to a AUD$350 million major Port construction and expansion project and a $800 million green hydrogen project.
  • Advising a large public mining company on a AUD$78 million renewable energy project.
  • Advising a large Aboriginal Corporation in relation to various acquisitions of mining and property assets.
  • Advising a large multinational mining company (ultimately the underbidder) on the acquisition of a 30% Joint Venture interest in a major WA operating gold mine.
  • Acting on the re-securitisation of a major WA gold mining centre – transfer of mining tenement mortgages and security interests relating to 118 mining tenements.  
  • Advising on the US$60 million trade sale of a Canadian lithium project.
  • Overseeing successful acquisition by scheme of arrangement of a public mining company, enabling a major shareholder to acquire full ownership.
  • Overseeing a AUD$102 million accelerated non-renounceable rights issue.
Marie Morris

Marie is a senior corporate lawyer specialising in mining and resources, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, construction and general commercial matters.  With a strong background in both transactional and advisory work, Marie has advised major corporations, ASX listed companies, major energy retailers and generators, Government Departments, Government Trading Enterprises and Port Authorities on high-value transactions and projects.  Additionally, Marie’s expertise extends to dispute resolution and complex litigation, where she has successfully represented clients in all superior court jurisdictions, including the Supreme Court of Western Australia and the Federal Court.

Having worked at top-tier international and national firms, Marie brings a strategic, commercially focused approach to legal problem solving.  In addition to her law degree, Marie has a degree in accounting and is currently pursuing a Master of Laws at the University of Western Australia specialising in mining and resources, ensuring that she remains at the forefront of industry developments.

Notable achievements include advising:

  • A major Australian Port Authority and Government Trading Enterprise in relation to a $800 million green hydrogen project.
  • A large electricity network operator in relation to a $655 million clean energy project, including preparation of pre tender documentation and advising on general conditions of contract for design and construct.
  • An ASX listed mining company in relation to a $99.45 million public acquisition by scheme of arrangement.
  • A State Government Department in relation to a $70 million construction project, including drafting and advising on the ECI contract and AS 4300 general conditions of contract for design and construct. 
  • A major energy companies on the $15 million sale and purchase of a major gas pipeline and joint venture operations, including deal structuring, drafting and negotiating the asset sale and purchase agreements and gas transportation agreement.
  • An ASX listed mining services company with respect to a $17 million construction dispute.
  • A nickel resource company with respect to a $10 million Supreme Court action involving a breach of contract claim with respect to a tenement co-operation agreement and asset sale agreement.  
  • A major Australian Port Authority and Government Trading Enterprise in relation to all commercial Port operations.
  • Various ASX listed resource companies with respect to ASIC investigations into insider trading, advising on trading policies and corporate governance issues.
  • A large mining services company, with respect to urgent injunction proceedings in the Supreme Court of Western Australia.
  • Large (Tier 1) and mid-size construction companies, sub-contractors and principals with respect to complex litigation involving construction contracts (defect claims, payment claims, EOT claims, termination rights, suspension rights).
Taylor Saggers

Taylor was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Western Australia in June 2020. Since then, Taylor has worked in both private practice and the public sector, including time at a boutique succession law firm and with the Australian Government Solicitor in the Dispute Resolution (Tax) team.

Taylor’s practice has included matters in the Supreme Court of Western Australia, Magistrates Court, State Administrative Tribunal, and Federal Court. She has experience across a broad range of areas, including debt recovery, tax, insolvency, equity, trusts, and international arbitration with a focus on investment law.

In 2023, Taylor completed a Master of Laws with a double major in Wills and Estates, and Estate Planning. Taylor has provided advice to both individuals and government departments, including agencies within the Federal Government.

Karl McGrail

LLB MBA GDLP (Lawyer)

Karl is a specialist in contract negotiation and drafting, corporate governance and corporate and commercial transactional matters. He also has a keen interest in planning and environmental law.

Prior to embarking on his professional services legal journey, Karl had an extensive career in business, including in the travel and tourism industry and the real estate industry.

For a period of 18 years, Karl owned and operated a small logistics and distribution business. This enabled him to develop considerable, entrepreneurial, managerial, leadership, problem solving and conflict resolution skills – an asset to a boutique commercial law firm.

Karl volunteers with Orange Sky laundry service and in his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, walking and reading.

Lachlan Phillips

Law Clerk

Lachlan is currently studying a Juris Doctor at the University of Western Australia. He previously completed a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Finance and German Studies, at the same university in 2021.
